49ers Round 2 Pick, No. 43 Overall: Offensive Lineman Wyatt Davis

One of the more impressive parts of the trade with the Miami Dolphins to move up to No. 3 from No. 12 is the fact that while the 49ers gave up a good chunk of future capital, they didn’t relinquish any more 2021 draft picks.

That allows them to move around the draft as they have been wont to do during John Lynch and Kyle  Shanahan’s tenure or allows them to stand pat and take the best player available, who also happens to fill a need like the interior offensive line, cornerback, or wide receiver.

In this case, the board fell to one of the new Niners quarterbacks’ old Buckeye teammates in the form of interior offensive lineman Wyatt Davis.

Davis is a redshirt junior but only turned 22 years old in February, which means he can immediately upgrade San Francisco’s O-line and could project to do so for a long time.

He’s a good athlete for someone his size, with a solid 33 7/8-inch wingspan, making him a solid fit for Shanahan’s offense. His history with Fields would also be a boon and his experience as a starter over his last two seasons in Columbus could allow him to step in a starter.

Davis is a California native, too, so the 49ers would allow him a bit of a homecoming, although he is from the Los Angeles area instead of the Bay Area.

With no disrespect to Daniel Brunskill, the right guard is the one slot along San Francisco’s O-line that doesn’t have a starter locked in. Drafting Davis in the second round could change all that and add the secondary effect of strengthening the positions’ depth.
