49ers Sleeper No. 4: TE Tommy Tremble, Notre Dame

The Niners have made it no secret they’re still looking to bolster the tight end depth chart behind George Kittle, giving head coach Kyle Shanahan a quality one-two punch at the position and forcing opposing defenses to try to find ways to defend against it.

Last year’s attempt to do so landed Charlie Woerner in the draft, followed by a free-agent pickup of veteran tight end Jordan Reed, although neither truly hit home as far as production went.

So it’s likely San Francisco will consider doing so again in this year’s draft.

If the 49ers can bank on a lack of college production affecting Notre Dame tight end Tommy Tremble falling in the draft order a bit, they could be getting themselves quite a steal.

The 6-foot-4, 248-pound Tremble had only 35 catches for 401 yards and four touchdowns the last two years with the Fighting Irish. But just like Kittle, Tremble’s college stats won’t be the reason why teams will like him.

Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline broke down why Tremble could be so valuable at the NFL level:

"His ability to run block and pass protect while also being a pass-catching threat is reminiscent of Josiah Deguara in last year’s class. As a result, Tremble will have multiple alignments in the NFL. Subsequently, that versatility will make him a valuable asset."

The Niners could use Tremble as a quality blocking tight end right away, not unlike Woerner. But Tremble has far more upside as a versatile pass-catcher, which would give him a long-term edge over San Francisco’s late-round tight end addition from a year ago.
