Round 6, Pick No. 194 Overall: 49ers select wide receiver Shi Smith, South Carolina

Remember, this NFL Draft is laden with quality wide receivers, and there are a number of names poised to go late on day three who, at least in thinner classes, probably could shade into the latter stages of day two.

It’s a wonder why the 49ers haven’t featured more of slot receiver Richie James over the years, which suggests Kyle Shanahan isn’t overly trusting of his talents.

Either way, if the Niners are intent on moving on and still want another slot option who can run good routes and create mismatches by using their elusiveness in the open field, going after South Carolina wide receiver Shi Smith wouldn’t be a bad idea in Round 6.

Smith, 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds, had himself 633 receiving yards on 57 receptions with four touchdowns last year for the Gamecocks, and it at least would be enticing enough to see him reunite with his former collegiate teammate, Deebo Samuel.

As a slight bonus, Smith has a bit of experience as a kick returner on special teams, too, so he’d automatically be in the mix for that role.

If anything, though, San Francisco would be rounding out its wide receiver room with some promising depth by selecting Smith in the sixth round.
