No. 3: 49ers Defensive Tackle Javon Kinlaw

For much of 2020, then-rookie defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw was the most potent player along San Francisco’s defensive front.

In the wake of season-ending injuries to edge rushers Nick Bosa and Dee Ford, many an opposing offensive line focused attention on Kinlaw, frequently putting two blockers on him at any one time. And while Kinlaw wasn’t a prolific interior pass-rusher at the collegiate level, his 1.5 sacks last season is evidence enough he had his hands full.

Bosa is expected back, which is a boost. But the 49ers wanted to ensure as much pressure will be taken off Kinlaw as possible this upcoming season. While Ford’s return from a back injury is anything but guaranteed, the Niners made extra moves to revamp their defensive line.

One of these was to add a supplementary pass-rusher, Samson Ebukam, who’ll act as a speed rusher off the edge.

Ebukam’s speed was something San Francisco sorely missed in 2020. Even if Ebukam isn’t getting home with his pass rush, him taking at least one blocker out of the scrum should open up additional opportunities on the interior.

And on top of that, the 49ers re-signing nose tackle D.J. Jones can help spell Kinlaw in base formations when a 1-technique player is needed.

Expect Kinlaw to go through a notable ascent in 2021.
