SF 49ers Safeties (4)

FS Jimmie Ward

FS/SS Tarvarius Moore

SS Jaquiski Tartt

FS/SS Tavon Wilson

There’s very little to unpack here at the safety position.

Jimmie Ward is locked in as the starting free safety and all signs point to the 49ers grooming Tavarius Moore to start next to him as they look to move away from the traditional free safety/strong safety paring.

Marcell Harris was brought back on a one-year restricted free agent tender but has not shown himself to be a player who is useful as much more than a bruising run stopper and special teams player.

But the re-signing of Jaquiski Tartt probably means Harris will spend the preseason on the roster bubble. In this case, I’d easily take Tartt over Harris, especially given another move the team made at the position this week.

The intrigue is the late addition of veteran strong safety Tavon Wilson, whom the 49ers reportedly signed to a contract on Monday.

Wilson is primarily a special teams player but could step in place of either Ward or Moore in case of injuries, as the 31-year-old veteran has experience in both places on the field.

The group is solid with Ward, Moore, Tartt, and Wilson, although the numbers could shake out in Harris’ favor if the 49ers choose to lower their numbers elsewhere.
