49ers seem committed to Jimmy Garoppolo… right now

49ers’ salary cap hits in 2022 start to get expensive

Most, if not all of the Niners’ re-sign and free-agent deals for 2021 amid the decreased salary cap had lowish hits in year one. Makes sense, especially with the cap at $182.5 million.

While the salary cap is expected to bounce back nicely in 2022 — currently projected by OTC at $203 million — many of San Francisco’s new deals will see substantial pay increases across the board.

Including the following 2022 player cap hits:

  • Trent Williams — $14.12 million
  • Alex Mack — $6.725 million
  • Arik Armstead — $20 million
  • George Kittle — $16.1 million
  • Samson Ebukam — $8.25 million
  • Jimmie Ward — $11.25 million

This doesn’t include All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner, who is able to enter negotiations this year for an extension that’ll likely be in the range of $18 million annually. Perhaps more. And 2022 marks the year where EDGE Nick Bosa can start extension discussions for a deal that could easily make him the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL.

Right now, OTC has the 49ers with $19,703,451 in cap space for 2022. There are a lot of factors that’ll obviously change, including EDGE Dee Ford’s restructure and the signing of the team’s 2021 rookie class.

Other roster moves, cap casualties and restructures will change that figure a lot, too.

And one of those cap casualties could still end up being Jimmy Garoppolo. Maybe not in 2021, but it’s certainly in play a year from now.
