Round 5, Pick No. 155 Overall: 49ers select running back Rhamondre Stevenson, Oklahoma

On the surface, it wouldn’t appear as if the 49ers would need a running back. Even though veterans Tevin Coleman and Jerick McKinnon are going to depart in free agency, Kyle Shanahan still has other runners — Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson Jr., JaMycal Hasty and Austin Walter — signed through 2021.

The problem, however, is none of those players are under contract into 2022.

Considering Mostert, Wilson and Hasty all suffered serious injuries at various points last year, it wouldn’t be a bad move to infuse some younger talent with the long-term prospects for building the depth chart a little over a year from now.

And if San Francisco is looking for a quality fit on day three of the draft, Oklahoma’s Rhamondre Stevenson would be an excellent target.

Stevenson, 6-foot-0 and 246 pounds, showed up well at the Reese’s Senior Bowl and has the mix of size, strength and pass-catching abilities to make him a quality addition to Kyle Shanahan’s offense.

It’s a bit of a mixed bag where Stevenson goes, though. Some view him as a Round 3 selection, while other big boards have him pegged as a sixth-round pick.

But if he’s on the boards in Round 5 where the Niners have two picks, it wouldn’t be shocking at all to see Stevenson added.
