No. 1: Andy Dalton could be just what the 49ers need in a backup

Low risk, high reward for the 49ers with veteran quarterback Andy Dalton.

Assuming they could get him at a cheap backup/bridge deal, Dalton can be a solid backup to Jimmy Garoppolo.

Pros

Dalton most likely doesn’t want to be just a backup. This could push Jimmy G a bit more to prove he can handle the workload of an NFL quarterback.

During his brief time in Dallas with the Cowboys, Dalton completed 65 percent of his passes for 14 touchdowns and only eight interceptions. Not bad for a guy who thought he’d just be the second string to Dak Prescott when he signed last May.

The former Cincinnati Bengals star brings a lot of experience and could fit in just fine with the current 49ers roster.

Cons

Is Dalton good enough to push the Niners to a division title and home-field advantage if called upon?

No.

He could bring the team to a respectable record as he did in Dallas, but the 49ers need more than respectable. They need a backup who can come in, steal games and keep the team afloat in a challenging NFC West.

He’s also a pocket passer, who again the 49ers most likely want to move on from.

The backup quarterback position will be an intriguing story to follow. Many players could see it as a possibility to learn from Garoppolo and take over down the road, or they could see it as a chance to compete for the starting role right away.
