49ers: 5 best options to back up Jimmy Garoppolo in 2021
No. 4: Jameis Winston could go from one NFC rival to another by signing with the 49ers
When you hear quarterback Jameis Winston‘s name, you probably think back to his time in Tampa Bay when he threw for 30 interceptions.
But there’s more to Winston than we focus on.
Pros
Winston just watched the team who picked him first overall in 2015 win the Super Bowl the year both sides parted ways. There’s a massive chip on his shoulder, and if he doesn’t re-sign with the salary cap-stressed New Orleans Saints, he’d be great on the “revenge tour.”
In his last season with the Bucs, he threw for 30 touchdowns and over 5,000 yards. With a year behind quarterback Drew Brees under his belt, Winston has hopefully learned about accuracy and how to play a better brand of football.
Winston is also mobile. He could be an underrated option for head coach Kyle Shanahan. The Florida State product has rushed for 1,038 yards in his career with 10 touchdowns.
He would also be a cheap option as he only signed with the Saints in 2020 for $1.1 million, plus bonuses.
Cons
Eighty-eight career interceptions and 42 losses. Not a good look on his résumé.
The six-year vet is on the list of “first-round busts.” He’s had a less-than-stellar career, and his confidence might be shot, especially if Brees decides to return in 2021.
He might be a cheap option, but the 49ers will also be looking towards the future when they sign a backup quarterback.
