49ers Round 7 Pick, No. 194 Overall: Cornerback Camryn Bynum

Yes, yet another cornerback for the mix. But when you enter an offseason with the slim pickings the 49ers currently have at the position, it makes good sense to go all out to fill the holes, even if it means an entirely new group in 2021.

This third corner is Cal’s Camryn Bynum, a native Californian who was basically in the mix with the Golden Bears from his freshman year until his COVID-shortened senior season. He racked up 184 career tackles, six interceptions, and 28 passes defended in 42 games.

His size isn’t quite as impressive as someone like Keith Taylor nor are his overall skills up to Jaycee Horn’s caliber. But for a seventh-round pick, Bynum might have the skills to make an impact at the next level.

Even more interesting might be his potential to be a versatile piece who can move from the outside, the slot, or even slide over to safety in a pinch, as he’s not only solid in pass defense but also a willing run defender from whatever cornerback position he’s asked to play.

His hands are always active and he’s best when close to the line of scrimmage, which is what might make him an interesting prospect at slot corner, a need the 49ers might soon have.

At this point in the draft, teams are looking for a player who can find his niche. Bynum’s versatility might be an issue there, but he showed enough at the Senior Bowl to merit intrigue at this point in the draft.
