No. 3 49ers Prospect to Avoid: Quarterback Jamie Newman

It’s looking more and more like the Niners are going to stick it out with their starting quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, in 2021.

Yet San Francisco could benefit from a complete overhaul of their quarterbacking depth chart, particularly with backups C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens both free agents this offseason. And with Garoppolo’s long-term future still uncertain, it surely wouldn’t hurt for the 49ers to seek a potential developmental quarterback with some high upside.

Prior to the 2021 Reese’s Senior Bowl, Georgia’s Jamie Newman was the perfect project-type quarterback.

The dual-threat signal-caller had some solid pedigree at Wake Forest before transferring to Georgia in 2020. Yet opting out for last season didn’t necessarily help his cause, and Newman’s struggles during the Senior Bowl and the week of practice leading up to it surely impacted his draft stock in a negative way.

As such, Newman will have a lot to prove to potential suitors leading up to the draft.

While it’ll be good if the Niners want to dip into the mobile dual-threat quarterbacking trend in today’s NFL, using a mid-round pick on someone like Texas A&M’s Kellen Mond, the Senior Bowl’s MVP, would be a much wiser investment than Newman.
