49ers Trade Partner No. 3: Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions already showed they’re not afraid to execute blockbuster deals, sending away veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for quarterback Jared Goff and additional draft picks, one in Round 3 this year and first-round selections in 2022 and 2023.

Because of this, it’s not likely the Lions are going to be heavily in play for a long-term quarterback, at least not right away, meaning the No. 7 overall selection could have a lot of value for a team potentially in the market for a quarterback.

Maybe the 49ers, depending on what they think of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo‘s long-term future and who falls out of the big four consisting of Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, BYU’s Zach Wilson, Ohio State’s Justin Fields and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance.

The Lions, looking yet again at another long-term rebuild under first-year head coach Dan Campbell, still have only six picks in this year’s draft despite making the move with the Rams, meaning some additional draft capital would do a lot of good.

Depending on how aggressive the Niners want to be, it’s feasible they move a first- and second-round pick this year along with some additional draft capital in 2022 to get up to No. 7 overall.

That is if San Francisco is sold on one of those quarterbacks falling out of the top five.
