The San Francisco 49ers and California’s Governor, Gavin Newsom, have shed a bit of light on potentially having fans in stadiums within the state in 2021.

Currently, Levi’s Stadium is being used as a massive COVID-19 vaccination site. The last time the building was used for a football game was Week 9 on Thursday Night Football, and the last time fans were actually in attendance was the NFC Championship game in January of 2020.

Recently, Gov. Newsom said he’s hopeful fans can attend MLB games this summer. This would give the 49ers a chance to see how the San Francisco Giants operate during the pandemic.

“We’re working on the final details, but we’ve been working very closely with Major League Baseball,” Newsom said this week as long as case numbers keep falling. “Then I have all the confidence in the world fans will be back safely.”

Obviously much can change between now and the start of the NFL season, but we have to take whatever good news we can.

The 49ers announced they’ve gathered a medical experts team to figure out how seats can be filled come September. Read their statement here.

During the 2020 season, a handful of teams had attendance. The first was the Kansas City Chiefs. They welcomed a smaller number of people to Arrowhead Stadium. As the season progressed, more people attended games and we saw the Super Bowl in Tampa Bay, Florida welcome the most amount of fans.

But what will games look like in 2021 in the Bay Area?

Well, assuming masks are still mandatory, we should expect masks to be worn at all times.

We all enjoy a good drink and snacks while watching the game. If there’s a mask mandate, will food and drinks be sold? How will that part work?

Social distancing could also still be enforced. This means Levi’s Stadium won’t be sold out, but we could see actual people spread out instead of cardboard cutouts. There could be priority given to season-ticket holders before tickets are sold to the general public, which seemed to be part of the initial plan when the Niners informed their season-ticket holders that fans wouldn’t be allowed last year.

California has been one of the toughest states on COVID-19 rules, Santa Clara County especially. They’ve also been one of the hardest-hit states when it comes to cases as well. So the fact we could possibly start attending games in the Bay Area within the next few months is extremely exciting.

As long as things progress in a positive matter it should just be a matter of time before we can all enjoy watching the 49ers dominate the NFL in person once again.
