Round 1, Pick No. 43 Overall: SF 49ers select offensive guard Trey Smith, Tennessee

The Niners’ biggest offensive line need this offseason is likely going to be at left tackle where Trent Williams could easily depart on a massive deal elsewhere in free agency. Fortunately, this year’s draft has a good number of quality linemen available throughout all rounds, and making some interior upgrades would be smart, too.

Especially with the rotating door seen last season at right guard and a possible need to replace left guard Laken Tomlinson whose contract expires in 2022.

If it weren’t for a serious medical concern from 2018 — blood clots in his lungs — Tennessee offensive guard Trey Smith would easily be a first-round pick. He’s one of the best run-maulers in this year’s draft and has the versatility to play at both tackle and guard, although most scouts view him solely as an interior option.

The 6-foot-4, 312-pound prospect would be an instant upgrade at right guard. And at worst, San Francisco could replace Williams with the player it deemed to start at right guard, Daniel Brunksill, and move him to left tackle — a contingency option the SF 49ers had some success with in 2019.

More importantly, though, Smith would provide that interior boost at a position the SF 49ers have largely neglected the past three years.
