49ers NFL Draft: 5 day-two quarterbacks John Lynch should look at
By Peter Panacy
49ers Target No. 2: Jamie Newman, Georgia
It’s fair to think Georgia quarterback Jamie Newman didn’t help his draft stock much by sitting out 2020 after transferring from Wake Forest a year ago. As such, it’s nearly impossible to observe his progression and growth outside of looking at his not-so-impressive efforts during the Senior Bowl and the series of practices leading up to the game.
This could push Newman out of day-two consideration, perhaps into Rounds 4 or 5, depending on how teams view his talents.
Yet those talents are undeniably there.
The 6-foot-3, 235-pound quarterback has dual-threat capabilities and a solid arm that can hit nearly every point on the field. While his field vision is limited and the scheme at Wake Forest generally called for one-read options, honing Newman’s raw abilities could end up resulting in him being one of the more dynamic quarterbacks in the mold of the Arizona Cardinals’ Kyler Murray, albeit with a much bigger build.
Newman is a project, yes. But some offense is going to fall for him, thereby increasing his draft stock and potentially convincing John Lynch and the 49ers he’d be a good weapon to have.
