49ers NFL Draft: 5 day-two quarterbacks John Lynch should look at

49ers Target No. 3: Davis Mills, Stanford
Stanford quarterback Davis Mills is one of those prospects who’s relatively hard to evaluate. Some big boards have him as a late day-three prospect, perhaps even flirting with the ranks of the undrafted, while others consider him a solid find in Round 3.
But the reason why Mills shows up on this list of day-two targets is because of the school connection, namely John Lynch never completely avoiding targeting players from his alma mater.
Mills, 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, saw action in only five games for the Cardinal last season amid the Pac-12 limiting its season because of the pandemic. And his 7-to-3 touchdown-to-interception ratio isn’t overly impressive during his five games played, although he was able to complete 66.2 percent of his pass attempts last year.
What makes Mills a possibility for the 49ers here is the ability to excel well enough in an offense where both timing and open route-runners are the norms — something Kyle Shanahan has been forced to engineer for sub-par backups like C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens.
Sure, Mills probably wouldn’t be a threat to Jimmy Garoppolo at any point soon. But the Niners do have a need for competent backups, and Mills certainly fits the bill there.
