SF 49ers roster: Targeting one free agent for each position in 2021
By Peter Panacy
SF 49ers Quarterback: Dak Prescott
This starts off with a lot of speculation.
The first would be the SF 49ers electing to move on from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, freeing up $24.1 million in much-needed cap space but opening up a serious void in his wake. While that’s risky in of itself, there aren’t too many free agents on the market worth targeting to replace him.

- Low-risk free agents 49ers can still target before NFL Draft
- 49ers aren’t talking to this free agent (but they should)
Except for Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, though.
That’s the other speculative part: Will Dallas re-sign Prescott, the signal-caller upon which it used the franchise tag in 2020? Prescott subsequently suffering a serious injury last season could have easily created a grudge between him and the Cowboys, who’ve elected to spend money on other areas of the roster such as with running back Ezekiel Elliott and wide receiver Amari Cooper.
The Cowboys’ lack of commitment to Prescott has already caused quite the stir. But if he hits the open market, he still won’t come cheap. One might guess an annual contract of $30 million, perhaps more, would be in the works.
Parting ways with Garoppolo would help with the price tag, of course. And one should assume Prescott would be a massive upgrade.
As far as other quarterbacking free agents go, there’s always Prescott’s teammate in Dallas, Andy Dalton.
But Niners fans probably don’t want to go there.
