SF 49ers: Redrafting the entire 2020 NFL Draft class
By Peter Panacy
Round 5, Pick No. 153 Overall (from Dolphins): Cornerback Bryce Hall, Virginia
Original Pick: OL Colton McKivitz (No. 153 Overall)
The Niners traded away their second-round pick in 2020 to acquire EDGE Dee Ford, then moved their third- and fourth-round picks to get wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders from the Denver Broncos.
Even though San Francisco used its original Round 5 selection to move up for Justin Jefferson in this scenario, the play involving trading away players is still an option. As such, the SF 49ers still are able to move Matt Breida to the Miami Dolphins to land pick No. 153 overall.
Instead of trying to reinforce the offensive line, though, the Niners do something they should have done anyway: reinforce the secondary knowing a number of key free agents were going to depart the team in 2021.
And the pick? Virginia cornerback Bryce Hall, who was eventually selected by the NY Jets.
Had Hall came out in the 2019 NFL Draft, he could have easily been a day-two selection. But injury concerns thwarted his draft stock, and he somehow managed to fall all the way into Round 5.
Yet despite playing just eight games his rookie season, the 6-foot-1, 202-pound corner was productive enough with one interception, three pass breakups and 36 tackles over that span. At least, he would have helped resolve some of the serious depth questions San Francisco now faces at cornerback.
At best, he’d become a long-term boundary starter.
