As previously noted, even if Jason Verrett and Emmanuel Moseley return, the SF 49ers will need to bulk up the cornerback room by likely selecting multiple players at that position in the 2021 draft.

At this point in the draft, that means guys who will need more development and who can fill in on special teams and often means players who have high upside due to college production or athleticism.

The latter is what more defines Georgia cornerback D.J. Daniel who has a size similar to Moseley and is an above-average athlete. He was only a two-year starter for the Bulldogs, although he only played in four games during his senior year.

Daniel had zero interceptions in 17 career games, although he did have nine pass breakups, suggesting ball skills that could translate into a few picks on the NFL level.

Ultimately, a sixth-round defensive back is going to make the roster on the strength of his ability to play on special teams, and Daniel is a sound enough tackler to allow him to make a name for himself as an ace in that department, similar to the work that Moseley did in his rookie campaign.

The development will be key for Daniel, but he wouldn’t be expected to come in and make an immediate impact outside of special teams, so that would be afforded to him.
