SF 49ers Free Agent to Avoid No. 1: Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky
At some point, someone’s going to say it: San Francisco should sign Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.
It seems as if any available quarterback, whether he’s on the trade block or a pending free agent, has been linked to the SF 49ers this offseason amid all the speculation they could move on from their current starter, Jimmy Garoppolo. Trubisky, who’ll be forever linked to the Niners because of that 2017 first-round trade that allowed the Bears to grab him at No. 2 overall, has floundered into the ranks of “bust” status.
More from SF 49ers Free Agency
- Former 49ers kicker Robbie Gould still wants to play for Bears
- 49ers bolster wide receiver room by grabbing Chris Conley
- 49ers news: Kerry Hyder is back to bolster defensive line depth
- Low-risk free agents 49ers can still target before NFL Draft
- 49ers aren’t talking to this free agent (but they should)
All one needs to do is look at how Chicago rotated back and forth with Trubisky and fellow quarterback Nick Foles last season to see just how much the former had fallen.
Even if San Francisco is looking at a backup to support and push Garoppolo, which could be perceived as a need if it elects to stay with him, Trubisky is someone the team has no reason to consider. There are likely to be other teams with head coaches boasting the ability to “fix” Trubisky anyway, and many of those squads are going to boast more cap space than what the SF 49ers will have.
Regardless if a bidding war ends up happening for Trubisky, the Niners have no need to get involved and little reason to take on a reclamation project despite their own quarterbacking concerns.
San Francisco needs to block any thought of Trubisky donning red and gold. Period.
