SF 49ers free agency: 5 potential landing spots for Trent Williams
By Peter Panacy
No. 2: Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts emerge as a bit of a wild card here in the Trent Williams sweepstakes, although there’s ample reason why they’d want to be involved in an NFL free agency sales pitch.
Indianapolis just saw its stalwart left tackle, Anthony Castonzo, retire after 10 excellent seasons at the pro level, suddenly opening up a void not unlike what the SF 49ers went through when they lost left tackle Joe Staley to retirement last offseason, thus prompting the in-NFL Draft move for Williams.
The Colts are kind of in flux with their offense heading into 2021. Quarterback Philip Rivers is a free agent, and there’s a strong chance they’ll be in play for a rookie signal-caller if they don’t engineer some sort of blockbuster move.
Whatever the route taken winds up being, Indy will have a projected $72.7 million in cap space. That’s the second most in the NFL heading into this offseason, meaning even if the Colts land a high-profile quarterback and take on his contract, they can still afford to pay out a player of Williams’ ilk.
Plus, one can expect the Colts to be aggressive with pending shakeups coming forward within the AFC South this offseason.
And Williams might be a seamless transition piece to replace Castonzo.
