No. 1: SF 49ers should promote Adam Peters to general manager

John Lynch is one of the public faces of the Niners front office. But Kyle Shanahan and Vice President of Player Personnel Adam Peters do a lot of the additional grunt work, at least in terms of scouting players and creating the roster.

While there’s no direct line of credit, Peters should receive a lot of it for finding hidden-gem talents San Francisco has had over the last four years, names like wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, running back Jeff Wilson Jr., offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill and many other role players who assumed much bigger roles in time.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the Carolina Panthers already requested permission from the SF 49ers to interview Peters for their vacant general manager job. Additionally, Broncos general manager John Elway is stepping down from his position, potentially opening up the door for Peters to come back to the organization from which he joined the Niners in 2017.

Now, it’s time to see how much San Francisco values Peters, who’ll have the opportunity to garner more power and more money this offseason in other steads.

Here’s how it could work, though. Lynch could retain a similar role as a team spokesperson and assume the role of President of Football Operations, where he’d still have some oversight into the roster. Peters, meanwhile, would get the internal promotion to general manager, thereby keeping his talents in-house without having to worry about another team purging him from the front office.

If the SF 49ers value him that much, of course.
