Round 5, Pick No. 172 Overall (from Saints): SF 49ers select Royce Newman, Guard, Ole Miss

With the offensive line issues and injuries this season, John Lynch and Co. double-dip on offensive linemen, this time taking versatile Ole Miss’ Royce Newman here in the fifth round.

Newman, who stands at 6-foot-6 inch and 310 pounds, worked his way into the starting lineup a season ago, starting each game at left guard for Ole Miss. After allowing only one sack last year in 416 pass blocks, he was moved to right tackle this season and has shined.

San Francisco could use another versatile offensive lineman, especially with Trent Williams set to hit free agency and the inconsistent play of tackles Mike McGlinchey and Justin Skule.

Regardless of how the front office handles the quarterback situation, one thing is certain: Whoever ends up under center will certainly need better protection. The team will need to invest in the line to get the most production from the most important position in football.

And Newman could help that cause.

With an invitation to the Reese’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, Newman has a chance to impress NFL scouts and coaches and raise his draft capital. His stock has him currently slotted to go anywhere from Rounds 5 to round 7.

If the SF 49ers get a chance at drafting Newman here, they should jump at the opportunity.
