SF 49ers Option No. 6: The Field (2%)

Even if the Niners opt for a rookie quarterback in the NFL Draft, there’s always the chance they peruse the wire to find a bridge option. And even if San Francisco doesn’t get the signal-caller it wants on draft day, a short-term veteran option could still be in play, too, much like it appeared to be back in 2017 when Kyle Shanahan opted for C.J. Beathard and now-New England Patriots quarterback Brian Hoyer.

Outside of Dak Prescott, the list of available free-agent quarterbacks in 2021 isn’t overly impressive. The Patriots’ Cam Newton should be available, although one has to admit he’s never looked quite the same since his 2015 MVP season, and this year in New England hasn’t exactly been stellar.

Perhaps the Miami Dolphins’ Ryan Fitzpatrick or Indianapolis Colts’ Philip Rivers wind up on Shanahan’s radar.

Hoyer should be available, too, but let’s not go there.
