No. 4: SF 49ers Right Tackle Mike McGlinchey

Just take a look on Twitter, and you’ll see two entirely different camps in the discussion about right tackle Mike McGlinchey‘s 2020 campaign.

On one hand, San Francisco’s top NFL Draft pick from 2018 has been one of the league’s better run blockers, and even Pro Football Focus‘ ratings back up the assessment, giving him an elite-level 91.1 overall grade in this category.

But McGlinchey’s pass protection has been suspect.

True, this wasn’t exactly his strong suit at the college level at Notre Dame, and PFF has handed McGlinchey a lowly 57.7 pass-blocking grade on the season with five sacks and 35 pressures allowed. McGlinchey’s defenders acknowledge this, but they’ve also highlighted some of the other issues the SF 49ers have had along their offensive line, particularly directly at McGlinchey’s left along the O-line’s interior.

Still, if there is a major reason why McGlinchey has disappointed this season, it’s because he hasn’t taken those necessary next steps in being an above-average pass blocker, which was supposed to be the key development piece he needed to achieve in 2020.
