SF 49ers: 5 players who should be on Santa’s naughty list
By Peter Panacy
No. 2: SF 49ers Quarterback Nick Mullens
Let’s cut backup quarterback Nick Mullens a little bit of holiday slack here.
Yes, Mullens has struggled a lot in relief of Jimmy Garoppolo this season. The former wasn’t initially supposed to somehow “save” the franchise’s chances of making the postseason. But that’s exactly what happened.
It’s hard being a backup quarterback. And it’s even harder knowing his post-Week 15 season-ending elbow injury could endanger whatever chances he has to return to San Francisco in 2021.
A restricted free agent, the SF 49ers’ “gift” to Mullens this offseason could be not offering him a qualifying tender, thereby leaving the former undrafted quarterback to his own devices next season in the wake of a likely offseason surgery.
Talk about being on Santa’s naughty list. It’s hard to imagine what put him there.
If there’s something to quantify it, though, Mullens’ league-worst 3.7 interception percentage is a likely culprit.
Naughty.
