No. 3: SF 49ers could be first team in modern era to lose 3 games at two different stadiums

There are a lot of weird things happening in 2020, and the SF 49ers haven’t been spared at all. And one of the early anomalies was actually built into the schedule before the craziness of the pandemic-influenced season took place when they had to travel to MetLife Stadium for Weeks 2 and 3 against the NY Jets and NY Giants, respectively.

Interestingly enough, the Niners went 2-0 during that stretch, which marks a better record than anything they’ve had at home.

Speaking of “home,” that’s been weird, too.

Before Santa Clara County ousted the SF 49ers from their home at Levi’s Stadium, they went 1-4 at their natural home venue before being forced to uproot and settle at the home of their NFC West division rivals, the Arizona Cardinals, home at State Farm Stadium.

So far at State Farm Stadium, the Niners are 0-2 and face the Cardinals one more time in Week 16.

Digging through the archives, shared stadiums like MetLife have produced contexts where teams could win or lose multiple games in two different venues during a regular season, provided a team like the Jets or Giants is the road team in an inter-conference matchup.

But no team in the modern football era has lost three games in a season at two different venues.

San Francisco could set that first if it loses to Arizona in Week 16.
