No. 2: SF 49ers CB Jason Verrett

Cornerback Jason Verrett is one of those players for the SF 49ers who would be on this list if you were making it for standout players for the entire season thus far, and he had yet another strong outing on Sunday against Washington.

After a less-than-stellar showing last Monday against Buffalo, Verrett rebounded with yet another strong game.

Pro Football Focus tagged him with allowing just two receptions on five targets for 21 yards and pulling down one excellent interception of quarterback Alex Smith:

Smith and Dwayne Haskins managed just a 13.3 passer rating when throwing Verrett’s direction. On the season, Verrett is allowing a rating of just 76.9 on 45 total targets.

Verrett seems to have finally gotten past his injury history and has been playing at a high level for the SF 49ers all season long, possibly making veteran cornerback Richard Sherman expendable for next season.

But Verrett, yet another former first-round draft pick who seems to have found a new home as a member of the SF 49ers, is also scheduled to be a free agent.

And while it seems likely that he’ll be looking for more than the minimum salary he’s made this season, the hope would be he recognizes how the SF 49ers stood by him after a rough 2019 and brought him back to flourish so far in 2020.

Sunday’s performance was yet another shining example of how good Verrett is when healthy. So here’s hoping he wants to work out a deal that works for him and the SF 49ers to stick around for 2021 and beyond.
