No. 4: SF 49ers lose Deebo Samuel to a hamstring injury

One offensive play, and wide receiver Deebo Samuel suffered a hamstring injury.

The Niners’ opening offensive snap featured one of those well-known Samuel jet sweeps, which went for 9 yards and seemed to indicate Kyle Shanahan’s offensive game plan was going to be up to snuff.

Except for Samuel came up lame after the play and frustratingly tossed his helmet while walking off the sideline. Reports later told that Samuel suffered a hamstring injury, and it’s important to note he already missed three games earlier this season with the same setback.

This latest injury probably sidelines Samuel for the rest of the year.

Granted, it makes sense San Francisco wanted to get one of its best wide receivers into the game with dimming playoff hopes on the line. But the sheer number of injuries this season, combined with the realistic understanding the postseason isn’t going to happen, make it a more prudent move to let Samuel rest and heal fully for the rest of 2020.

Now, the only hope is Samuel’s injury won’t carry over into 2021.
