5 SF 49ers with expiring contracts who haven’t helped themselves in 2020
No. 1: SF 49ers Running Back Jerick McKinnon
I’ve discussed running back Jerick McKinnon before as being one of the players I was a fan of when the team acquired him in 2018 following his departure from the Minnesota Vikings, but his time with the SF 49ers has likely come to an end.
More from SF 49ers Free Agency
- Former 49ers kicker Robbie Gould still wants to play for Bears
- 49ers bolster wide receiver room by grabbing Chris Conley
- 49ers news: Kerry Hyder is back to bolster defensive line depth
- Low-risk free agents 49ers can still target before NFL Draft
- 49ers aren’t talking to this free agent (but they should)
He has failed to cement himself as a reliable rusher for a team in the absence of fellow running backs Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman, who have both missed extensive time with injury, and is much more suited as a change-of-pace option.
Even though his pass-catching skills are above average, his 2018 ACL tear and setbacks the following season basically make it illogical to give him another contract with San Francisco. Add to that the fact he’s currently 29 years old, and it becomes almost a given the Niners will likely move on.
He is by no means a bad player, but an expendable one in a year where the team will be looking to shed any unnecessary salaries from their payroll going forward.
It’s definitely sad to be seeing some of these players likely leaving in free agency, but for the most part, it will probably improve the team’s chances at getting younger and setting themselves up for another Super Bowl run.
Hopefully, Kyle Shanahan reads this article and thinks the same!
