SF 49ers Loser: Jerick McKinnon

Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson both returned from lengthy stints on injured reserve during the game.

Neither had massive impact for the game, aside from Mostert’s touchdown run early in the first quarter, which was important. Yet both fumbled during the game, and one could have looked at Wilson’s turnover as a potential indicator Kyle Shanahan would relegate him to the bench for the rest of the game.

But Wilson was back in action shortly after turning the ball over.

None of this is good news for No. 3 running back Jerick McKinnon, who actually led all rushers with 7.0 yards per carry but had just three attempts on the ground and was clearly given the tertiary role behind the other two names on the depth chart.

McKinnon wasn’t overly spectacular during Mostert and Wilson’s absence between Weeks 8 and 10, and the former had only 3.8 yards per rush entering Week 12.

As long as Mostert and Wilson stay healthy, they’ll likely receive the majority of carries on the ground and targets out of the backfield, relegating McKinnon to an insurance role and third-down specialist at best.
