No. 1: SF 49ers’ defensive line not being anywhere near as potent

Despite all the obstacles and challenges that continue to plague this team, they’re right in the thick of things when you talk about NFC playoff spots.

In order for the SF 49ers to become serious contenders again, though, they’re going to need monster production from their lone stud along the defensive line, Arik Armstead.

Armstead has been a constant presence in the run game and does a good job at applying quarterback pressure. Unfortunately, his production numbers have been down this year as he’s only tallied 13 solo tackles and 1.5 sacks — a far cry from his team-leading 10 sacks year ago. Currently, that honor is going to EDGE Kerry Hyder, who was pegged as a backup option to injured pass-rushers, Dee Ford and Nick Bosa.

If defensive coordinator Robert Saleh continues to mix in different blitz packages, maybe this will benefit Armstead and he’ll see more one on one opportunities.  Once they present themselves, Armstead must take advantage of it.
