SF 49ers Candidate No. 3: Aaron Rodgers

Well, wouldn’t this be a dream?

Before the inevitable “no way” and “are you joking?” comments commence, think about a few things for a moment before shooing off the idea the Green Bay Packers move on from their quarterback, future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers is playing at an MVP-like level this season, and one can only wonder just how much time he has left in Green Bay after the Packers used a first-round pick on Utah State quarterback Jordan Love. Keep in mind, the Packers traded up to select Love, and it’s hard to fathom the idea this selection was made to merely light a proverbial “fire” under Rodgers after his so-so 2019 campaign in which the SF 49ers ousted him and his Packers from the NFC Championship game.

The latter outcome worked, though, as Rodgers has been electric this season. And at 36 years old, there’s no sign he’s letting up anytime soon.

Rodgers is still signed through 2023, although there’s zero in guaranteed money on his contract after this season. That’s where things get weird, and Green Bay could potentially save as much as $22 million in 2021 if it parts ways with him after June 1.

Not the likeliest of outcomes, but the Love selection surely complicates matters.

San Francisco’s own cap-space concerns make a Rodgers-to-SF 49ers free-agent deal seem highly unlikely, perhaps as unlikely as it might be for the Packers to move on.

But Green Bay seems intent to do so at some point, perhaps not so far in the future.
