No. 5: SF 49ers trade Dante Pettis for Bengals John Ross III

Player-for-player trades are rare in the NFL. But in terms of Dante Pettis and the SF 49ers, getting something, anything of value in a would-be trade would be a win.

Pettis’ fumble on a kickoff return against the Seahawks, in a game where he was active for the first time in three weeks, likely ended his Niners career. And there were already reports confirmed by Shanahan the SF 49ers were trying to trade the former 2018 second-round pick.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver John Ross III, whose 4.22 40-yard time at the NFL Scouting Combine is still a record, is also seeking a trade after being relegated to the backwaters of Cincy’s wide receiver depth chart:

Still just 24 years old, Ross has the kind of speed Shanahan needs for a downfield threat, and the head coach clearly doesn’t view Pettis as anything else but a placeholder on the 53-man roster now.

No worries about pick compensation in return. The salaries are close enough to make a deal work, too. About the only thing getting in the way would be Pettis’ Week 8 shoulder injury.

And the best part is both players would get a much-needed change of scenery.
