3 reasons why SF 49ers won’t trade for anyone at deadline
By Peter Panacy
With the 2020 NFL trade deadline approaching, the SF 49ers could be active buyers. Or John Lynch could simply stay with the roster he has.
No, this isn’t to say the SF 49ers won’t be trading for anyone at the quickly approaching 2020 NFL trade deadline. If that was the case, we’d be offering up a pretty insightful prediction and could see into the future.
Since we can’t, though, it’s best to forecast the reasons why general manager John Lynch and the Niners won’t be active buyers between now and Tuesday’s inter-team cutoff point. True, San Francisco already made an acquisition with the NY Jets by picking up depth EDGE Jordan Willis to go along with a day-three NFL Draft pick swap between 2021 and 2022.
But that’s not anything one would consider a blockbuster deal, right?
There’s always the chance Lynch and the SF 49ers could be sellers between now and Tuesday’s deadline, too, depending largely on whatever players the team currently has on the trade block. There have already been reports of some names, including wide receiver Dante Pettis, potentially being shopped. Yet that wouldn’t spark anything in the Niners’ proverbial “buyers” category anyway.
No, instead let’s look at three specific reasons why Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan want to hold off on making any acquisition deals between now and the 2020 NFL trade deadline, particularly paying attention to both the short- and long-term ramifications of what those non-moves could ultimately mean.
All the while, let’s keep in mind some of the best trades are the ones not made. And that’s what helps kick off the first reason why San Francisco stays inactive.
