SF 49ers Hero No. 2: Defensive Back Tarvarius Moore

San Francisco was missing its starting safety tandem of Jaquiski Tartt and Jimmie Ward, who were both out with injuries for Week 7.

If this was supposed to be a weakness Patriots quarterback Cam Newton was going to exploit, no one told third-year defensive back Tarvarius Moore.

Moore got the start at free safety in place of Ward and made his presence felt throughout the game. He was awfully rangy, too, converging regularly on the few players who managed to get beyond the second level of the SF 49ers defense. And while Moore’s six tackles and one pass defended will tell a good chunk of the statistical story, one could make the argument his coverage support on Newton’s second interception thrown was even more impressive:

Moore’s speed down the middle of the field gave cornerback Emmanuel Moseley, who intercepted the pass, a better shot to break free and to his right knowing Moore was going to be on the other side.

That play proved to be the proverbial “back breaker” of New England’s offensive efforts in the game.

And while Moseley will get the credit for the pick, Moore deserves a lot of the attention for helping make it happen.
