SF 49ers Overreaction No. 1: Niners are heading to the playoffs

A week ago, the thinking was the SF 49ers may end up owning a top-five pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

After Sunday night’s win, they’re right back in the mix for the NFC West crown and are shoo-ins to make it into the playoffs at the very worst.

Probably not and maybe, respectfully, to those two takes.

San Francisco’s upcoming schedule already makes the prospects for somehow catching the still-undefeated Seattle Seahawks rather daunting, and those three losses over the first six weeks will carry massive ramifications in determining the division’s pecking order by the end of December.

It might be best for the SF 49ers to forego the idea of repeating as division champions. But what about at least getting into the playoffs?

According to Football Outsiders, the Niners’ Week 6 win improved the postseason probability to 32.3 percent, which showed an increase of 10.5 points — a dramatic shift in the right direction.

But the probability is still just shy of one chance in three. Not exactly a berth-clinching game, unfortunately.

Granted, the newly added No. 7 seed in each conference greatly improves San Francisco’s chances to get into the postseason, even if it means an 8-8 or 9-7 record is needed to get it done. Yet the odds of it happening aren’t that great, meaning the Niners are closer to going home early at the end of the regular season than they are to hanging around into January football.
