No. 4: SF 49ers have faith in No. 4 RB Jeff Wilson

One of the other intriguing training camp battles this summer was who would secure the No. 4 running back spot behind the trio of Jerick McKinnon, Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman.

Following San Francisco waiving undrafted free-agent runner Salvon Ahmed earlier this offseason, the bout was between veteran tailback Jeff Wilson and another undrafted running back, JaMycal Hasty, who looked awfully impressive in training camp. Hasty could have emerged as a viable backup to McKinnon, as both have multifaceted abilities as runners and pass-catchers and McKinnon is still coming off a two-year absence from a 2018 torn ACL.

Yet McKinnon looks fully healthy, and it doesn’t seem as if the SF 49ers are overly concerned about his health heading towards the regular season.

So, as The Athletic’s Matt Barrows first reported, Hasty ended up being waived yet could be a prime target for the practice squad if he clears waivers:

Wilson, an underappreciated receiver from this position, now finds himself the No. 4 tailback on the depth chart, which will look something like this:

  1. Tevin Coleman
  2. Raheem Mostert
  3. Jerick McKinnon
  4. Jeff Wilson
