NFL Hot Seat No. 3: Jared Goff, Los Angeles Rams

From a financial standpoint, the Los Angeles Rams sure put themselves into a mess with some of their recent contract holdings, and quarterback Jared Goff commanding nearly 15 percent of the team’s payroll entering 2020 doesn’t bode too well.

Moving on from him would be difficult, especially considering a sheer cut in 2021 would currently generate far more dead money than cash saved. At the same time, though, another regression year from Goff could prompt Los Angeles to dip into the NFL Draft next season for a would-be replacement on the cheap.

Speaking of regression, Goff’s fall from the impressive numbers he posted during the Rams’ Super Bowl year in 2018 alone could put him on the NFL hot seat entering 2020.

Goff regressed in nearly every category. Despite leading the league with 626 pass attempts, Goff saw a two-point drop in his completion percentage (62.9), tossed 10 fewer touchdowns (22), threw four more interceptions (16) and had a passer rating (86.5) nearly 15 points below what he enjoyed the previous year.

It could be because of an inept offensive line or the failure of L.A.’s rushing attack to establish itself.

Either way, Goff will be feeling the pressure to bounce back this season.
