No. 1: 49ers Trade Off… Mike McGlinchey?

Maybe there’s a way for San Francisco to lure away Jamal Adams from the Jets without having to dish out a first-round pick.

And it would involve packaging up a day-two selection along with two-year right tackle Mike McGlinchey.

OK, so this might not be a popular decision. At least not on the surface. McGlinchey was the Niners’ top pick from the 2018 NFL Draft and has just two years under his belt. Yet there’s a chance the Niners consider moving on from McGlinchey at some point after his rookie deal is up. And just how the franchise feels about McGlinchey could be reflected by its efforts to bring aboard Trent Williams upon left tackle Joe Staley’s retirement. McGlinchey wasn’t pegged to be Staley’s heir apparent, as initially anticipated back in 2018.

McGlinchey has been good, not great in a Niners uniform, earning Pro Football Focus grades of 74.8 and 70.7 grades in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Yet he’s only two years into his four-year rookie deal, plus a fifth-year option, meaning he’d be more attractive a trade option for a team needing offensive line help and could prompt giving up a second-round selection instead of a first rounder.

Like the Jets, whom PFF ranked 28th overall along the O-line last season. Not even the first-round selection of tackle Mekhi Becton can solve that.

This would weaken San Francisco’s O-line, yes. And it would put more pressure on the team to re-sign Williams before he hits free agency in 2021. But the idea would probably be to insert the versatile Daniel Brunskill into McGlinchey’s spot, then letting veteran guard Tom Compton fill the void at right guard this season.

Again, it’s not a reality. But neither is a trade for Adams.

Still, it could work if need be.
