San Francisco 49ers: 5 rookies who’ll impress most in 2020 training camp

49ers Running Back JaMycal Hasty, Undrafted
Let’s keep the undrafted free agent hype train rolling with our next rookie.
Running back JaMycal Hasty is an explosive player out of Baylor. His best statistical year came as a senior in 2019 with 627 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, and he added 184 receptions on 25 catches.
While those stats don’t jump out at you, it’s important to know those 627 yards came on only 109 carries, which equals a 5.8 yards per carry on the season. That is running back Raheem Mostert at the end-of-the-season-type of running. Hasty’s 40-yard time hurt him at the combine, clocking in at 4.55 seconds. But his game speed suggests he is a lot faster than that. His vertical at the combine was 39 inches, which might be a better indication of his hip explosion, which is evident on film. You can also see on the film why Kyle Shanahan would be interested in a guy like Hasty.
At 5-foot-8 and 205 pounds, he is a very compact and tough runner between the tackles who is good at squaring his hips and getting north and south in a very violent manner.
And despite only 25 catches on the year has good hands to be dangerous in the passing game.
It will certainly be an uphill battle for Hasty coming into a good competitive backfield, but he should make a name for himself. One of the hot topics of conversation this offseason has been what will happen to running back Tevin Coleman after a rather underwhelming season in 2019. Once Hasty showcases his abilities in early August, that conversation might pick up steam as the Niners realize they may have found another playmaker for a fraction of the price.
