No. 1: What’s the future for Richard Sherman and the 49ers?

Richard Sherman’s self-negotiated contract gained him some nice bonuses in 2019, yet that term is scheduled to come to a close once 2020 is complete.

And it’s anyone’s guess what happens between the veteran corner and the 49ers beyond this season.

Sherman will turn 33 years old just after he’s scheduled to hit free agency, and there have been overtures about him possibly moving to safety at some point in the near future. Considering strong safety Jaquiski Tartt is also entering a contract year, it’s not out of the question the Niners consider re-signing Sherman and putting him closer to the box.

But that would create a similar situation to the one San Francisco would face if Sherman simply exits via free agency.

This is where the 49ers’ inaction at the position during the offseason could come into play. While the Niners can’t do much about that right now, outside of hoping some of their depth corners develop fast enough, eyes will focus on Sherman’s play at this stage in his career to determine what kind of role he should or could play with San Francisco in 2021 and beyond.

The lack of attention given to cornerback during the offseason suggests Sherman is still in the team’s plans moving forward, yet the front office isn’t ready to commit to a player on the wrong side of 30 years old.

Needless to say, Sherman’s 2020 campaign will be an intriguing one to watch.
