49ers depth chart: Offensive line starters

  • Left tackle: Trent Williams
  • Left guard: Laken Tomlinson
  • Center: Weston Richburg
  • Right guard: Daniel Brunskill
  • Right tackle: Mike McGlinchey

There shouldn’t be too much drama within the starting crop of 49ers offensive linemen despite the changes. Arguably the only battles up for grabs are for the starting right guard position, swing tackle and depth.

Brunskill has one name to watch primarily this year, veteran guard Tom Compton, whom the Niners signed away from the New York Jets during the offseason.

Compton, 31 years old, was awarded a so-so 49.7 overall grade by Pro Football Focus last year. And while he has the veteran savvy over Brunskill, and some may expect Compton’s level of play to improve amid a better O-line, the early guess would have Brunskill winning out this competition in training camp and the preseason. And that could ultimately push Compton, who signed a one-year deal, off the roster by Week 1.

Another caveat is Richburg’s health. His knee injury, suffered in Week 14 against the New Orleans Saints, could impact his availability to return for the regular season. Signs are looking good so far, but there’s a chance backup center Ben Garland is the starter for Week 1.
