49ers Offensive Line: Who Starts at Right Guard?

The Niners bid farewell to journeyman right guard Mike Person during the offseason, subsequently inking another veteran, Tom Compton, to compete for starting duties in Person’s stead.

But Compton won’t be alone in his bid to start.

There’s good reason to believe the versatile Daniel Brunskill overtakes Compton on the depth chart, starting in a spot where he filled in for Person during two games last year. With adequate depth at tackle behind Trent Williams and Mike McGlinchey already in place, thanks to Justin Skule and Shon Coleman’s presence, Brunskill could be the favorite to get the nod over Compton.

Another wrinkle, of course, is San Francisco’s newest lineman, Colton McKivitz, who primarily played tackle at West Virginia but projects to be an interior lineman at the pro level.

McKivitz is likely a dark-horse candidate to start, probably securing a backup role first before being considered a starter. Yet he’s someone needing to be mentioned.

Still, Compton’s veteran savvy and experience could end up being the decisive factor over Brunskill, though, so it’s yet another position battle wide open for the taking.
