No. 3: 49ers Tight Ends

This ranking comes directly from the most valuable and talented player on the 49ers roster, tight end George Kittle. At a position like tight end, which only has three to four players on the active roster, the relative value of each player greatly increases.

Ranking the third-best position group was quite difficult because the safeties had been solid, the running backs have exceptional talent and value and obviously the tight ends have Kittle as well as a solid backup in Ross Dwelley.

But in the end, if your team has the best player in football according to Pro Football Focus, that position is probably going to be pretty high up there:

The addition of the tight ends here also illustrates this question of depth over talent. It could be argued that as an overall position group, the safeties have stronger depth. But the individual pull of a star shifts it to the tight ends. That conflict there, whether small or large, indicates a general question about the structure of NFL teams.

In the end though, the talent of Kittle was too much to pass aside, and the fact that Dwelley is not a walking liability made it easier. From here on, this tug-of-war between depth and talent will be less prevalent as the top two positions on our list have both in spades.
