No 13: “With the 28th pick in the 2007 draft, the San Francisco 49ers select: Joe Staley.”

It’s a dream every kid across the globe has when they’re playing football in the backyard: Picturing themselves walking across the stage, getting handed the team’s hat and jersey, a “Welcome to the NFL” from the commissioner and then the media circus immediately after.

As previously mentioned, the 49ers had two picks in the first round back in 2007. For Joe Staley, he had several teams interested in him. He was on the phone with the Kansas City Chiefs before they decided to pick someone else.

The New England Patriots also had an interest in the rookie and were to pick at No. 28. The Patriots and 49ers made a trade that moved the Niners up and they were able to take Staley.

A couple of years ago, Staley reflected on his draft day experience which was a long, slightly confusing, ultimately rewarding day:

The organization might not have been at its peak during this time. But taking a guy with Staley’s size, athletic ability, loyalty and character make this one of the best draft picks the 49ers have ever had.
