Tight End
Lock: George Kittle
Strong Bubble: Ross Dwelley, Charlie Woerner
Weak Bubble: Daniel Helm
Long Shot: Chase Harrell
The 49ers underwent some notable tight end changes behind the 2019 All-Pro, George Kittle, losing both Garrett Celek (retirement) and Levine Toilolo (free agency) during the offseason.
Celek’s No. 2 support role was largely assumed by Ross Dwelley, who managed some key catches during periods when Kittle was out with injury a year ago. And while Dwelley isn’t a bona fide offensive weapon, his prowess should be enough to keep him around on the roster.
But Daniel Helm’s job is in jeopardy, thanks to San Francisco’s sixth-round addition of Georgia tight end Charlie Woerner.
Woerner, who had only 34 receptions for 376 yards and a touchdown over four seasons with the Bulldogs, isn’t exactly a receiving threat. But his notable abilities as a blocker help alleviate the free-agent loss of Toilolo.
Barring a complete meltdown during training camp, Woerner should likely earn a nod on the back end of San Francisco’s regular-season roster.
