No. 3: Defensive End Solomon Thomas

Drafted by 49ers third overall in the 2017 NFL Draft

Some could make the argument the Niners’ top pick from the 2017 NFL Draft, Stanford defensive end Solomon Thomas, should be higher up on this list. Perhaps even in the No. 1 spot.

It’s a sound argument. After all, top-five picks are supposed to be cornerstone pieces around which a team should build. And that’s what San Francisco was hoping for even after moving down from the No. 2 spot in a one-sided trade with the Chicago Bears.

Thomas wasn’t given any favors early, however, being played primarily on the outside instead of his natural interior-defensive positions. When he did see time on the inside, Thomas was notably better. Then in 2018, Thomas suffered the tragic and premature passing of his sister, which understandably hindered his efforts.

Yet Thomas didn’t bounce back in a vigorous way in 2019, again being relegated to a mere backup player.

The only thing right now keeping Thomas from assuming a higher pick is the fact he’s still a rotational player and offering service to the 49ers defense. He’ll never live up to his lofty draft billing, but at least the Niners are still making use of his efforts.
