While these San Francisco 49ers mock NFL Draft scenarios aren’t the most likely, here’s a seven-round mock where the Niners think a little “out of the box” but still walk away with a draft class that helps the team remain elite in 2020.

The 2020 NFL Draft is quickly approaching, and although it will not be done in person like normal, the importance of it is not dulled in any way. The San Francisco 49ers currently have seven picks in the draft, highlighted by the 13th overall pick acquired from the Indianapolis Colts in the DeForest Buckner trade.

While things around the draft are always up in the air and clouded with mystery, there are still expectations and conventional wisdom as to what teams are expected to do. The Niners, for example, are expected to target a wide receiver early in the draft and look for a defensive back early as well.

However, none of these things are certain.

In this mock draft, I think about some out-of-the-box picks the Niners could make. Now, these picks aren’t ridiculous or wild. I don’t have the Niners trading up to grab Alabama quarterback Tua Tagavoiloa or using a first rounder on a running back. Those are a little too far out of the box, and I don’t need the hate on Twitter.

Maybe this piece could be better called an edge-of-the-box mock draft because while the picks are unexpected, they are not completely illogical. They’re not completely out of the box, they’re just touching the edge.

With the goal of trying to make unexpected, but not completely illogical picks, I fired up Fanspeak’s mock draft tool, opened up The Athletic’s Dane Brugler’s 2020 NFL Draft Draft Guide, affectionately known as “The Beast,” and went to work.

Here are the results.
