No. 4: Cornerback

While safety is a possibility, cornerback seems much more a likelihood.

The Niners experienced great play from corners Richard Sherman and K’Waun Williams in 2019, while the No. 2 boundary cornerback duties were split between Ahkello Witherspoon and Emmanuel Moseley. The latter appears to be the favorite to start this season, which is fine. Although it’s a bit premature to assume Moseley is a long-term fix at the position just yet.

More importantly, however, Sherman, Williams and Witherspoon are all entering contract years. Re-signing Sherman and Williams seems like a strong possibility, although the 49ers may want to consider a younger, cheaper replacement for the former.

Either way, there are both short- and long-term question marks here.

While not as deep as wide receiver, the 2020 NFL Draft offers some promising cornerbacks in all rounds, and Round 1 isn’t an exception.

Ohio State’s Jeffery Okudah is seen as the top cornerback prospect, although he’ll likely be a top-five pick and out of San Francisco’s draft range. Florida’s C.J. Henderson, however, is likely to be selected in the teens, making him a very real target for John Lynch.
